Skrumble Network Announces Much Anticipated TestNet, LUNA

Cure Dystonia Now and National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association Announce a New Grant to Validate Tool for Spasmodic Dysphonia

Itasca, IL, December 19, 2018 --(PR.com)-- Cure Dystonia Now (CDN) and the National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association (NSDA) announced a new grant designed to validate an outcome measurement protocol for use with spasmodic dysphonia (SD). This co-funded grant is aimed to validate the use of the Communication Participation Item Bank (CPIB) as a tool to (1) measure the severity of restrictions in communication participation in SD patients and (2) accurately measure the outcome of a treatment for SD relative to the disease’s impact on communicative participation before and after treatment.

CPIB is considered an accurate outcome measure in compliance with NIH PROMIS guidelines that harness recent advances in information technology, psychometrics, and qualitative, cognitive, and health survey research. It has already been shown to be accurate for measuring the effect of multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and head and neck cancer on communication. The CPIB is likely to be more relevant for evaluation of SD because SD is itself a communication disorder, not a disease that coincidentally affects communication.

The study will test whether the CPIB is a valid tool to measure communication impairment in patients with spasmodic dysphonia and whether it can detect significant changes in communication during the treatment process. If successful, it could impact current treatment options and the evaluation of novel therapies.

Lacking a universal validation tool for use within the SD population is an obstacle to data analysis. This study aims to show that CPIB can be used clinically to accurately determine the severity of a patient’s symptoms. It can also be used to evaluate the impact of existing treatments on communication participation as well as the benefits of small dosing changes to allow optimization of dosing. “We are thrilled about this project because we believe this will have a positive impact on research and treatment for those with SD,” said CDN Co-President Marc Miller.

"Once there is data-driven evidence that a treatment works, it’s easier for it to be approved and covered for that condition," said NSDA President Charlie Reavis. “That’s why we are so excited to work collaboratively with CDN on this important project.”

Ultimatum Inc. and StrainConnect Partner with New York Based Nonprofit, Veteran’s Ananda, to Support Cannabis as an Alternative for Veterans with PTSD

San Francisco, CA, December 19, 2018 --(PR.com)-- According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, as many as 3.9 million veterans in 2018 are suffering from PTSD. An estimated 20% of Iraq and Afghanistan Conflict Veterans, up to 10% of Gulf War Veterans, and up to 30% of Vietnam War Veterans have experienced PTSD. To support veterans in getting the care they need and deserve, Veteran's Ananda, a New York based nonprofit, has partnered with Ultimatum Inc. and StrainConnect.

The public is invited to support U.S. veterans in having safe access to medical cannabis for PTSD symptoms and can participate in the joint initiative in two ways:

Sarah Stenuf, U.S. Army Veteran and founder of Veteran's Ananda, personally experienced PTSD post-Afghanistan deployment. She attempted to ease her symptoms through the use of drugs and alcohol before seeking medical treatment, where she was then prescribed 13 different medications. Exhausted and frustrated by years of ineffective treatment, she turned to cannabis and found it to be effective in alleviating her PTSD symptoms.

Research studies support Stenuf's experience. A study in New Mexico found a greater than 75% reduction in CAPS (Clinician Administered Post-Traumatic Scale) symptom scores when patients were using cannabis. In another study, not a single adverse event was reported.

Stenuf has partnered with StrainConnect and Ultimatum to spread awareness about the use of medical cannabis in alleviating PTSD and advocating for easier access for veterans to this life-changing alternative. Graphite Lab to Launch Hive Jump on Nintendo Switch and Xbox One

Sergei Tokarev: For One and a Half Years Lucky Labs Has Donated More Than 5,000 Books to Children's Libraries of Ukraine

Kyiv, Ukraine, December 20, 2018 --(PR.com)-- According to Sergei Tokarev, Lucky Labs has been working with charitable foundations that help children from low-income families for many years. Another area of charity is the reform of Ukrainian libraries and the creation of free space for communication, training and youth development on their basis. In the beginning of 2017, Lucky Labs initiated a large-scale educational project for teenagers in Ukraine.

“When we started working with children's libraries, we found out that one of the serious problems, especially in district and rural libraries, is the lack of modern relevant popular science literature for teenagers in Ukrainian language,” says Sergei Tokarev. “We have been working in Ukraine for a long time, and we believe that this country has a strong personnel potential. And we are interested in it increasing each passing year. Therefore, we decided to engage in educational activities and launch a project of publishing and popularizing non-fiction in Ukrainian language,” Tokarev says.

Thus, in 2017, the LuckyBooks project appeared. The main direction of its activity was to search for talented Ukrainian authors, publications and free distribution of popular science literature in the Ukrainian language in libraries and boarding schools in Ukraine.

“We decided to focus on the eastern regions of Ukraine. In today's realities, it is here that children most need help, support and motivation to develop. Well, the libraries here are much worse than the average in Ukraine. First, most of the library funds have not really been updated since the 1980s. And secondly, there was an acute shortage of high-quality Ukrainian-language literature for teenagers. We began to fill this gap,” says Lucky Labs co-founder.

For one and a half years of the project’s existence, Lucky Labs books have filled shelves of more than 150 children's libraries in the cities and villages of the Eastern and Southern regions of Ukraine. Among others, within the LuckyBooks project, books about gadgets, biotechnologies, and mathematics have been published. At the end of 2018, three books published with the support of LuckyBooks were included in the list of recommended for public procurement for libraries across the country. Several foreign non-fiction bestsellers for teenagers were translated into Ukrainian thanks to the project. In total, Lucky Labs has distributed more than 5,000 copies of books.

“The company's employees responded to the initiative with great enthusiasm. They traveled to different cities and presented books to children, organized scientific performances and various lectures to interest teenagers and get feedback on our activities,” says Sergei Tokarev.

LuckyBooks became widely known in the Ukraine and became an active participant of public educational activities in the country. In 2018, the project became a sponsor of the children's program of the largest book exhibition in Ukraine and helped create the virtual reality project Tukoni, based on a book by a Ukrainian writer. Tukoni has already managed to visit several cities of Ukraine and receive positive reviews from critics at the book exhibition in Frankfurt.

Call for AI Ethics Fellows to Better Understand the Societal Impacts of Artificial Intelligence

Montreal, Canada, December 21, 2018 --(PR.com)-- The Montreal Artificial Intelligence Ethics Institute (MAIEI) announces the launch and worldwide call for applications for the inaugural 2019-2020 MAIEI Fellowship. This one-year, non-residential global fellowship program is designed to amplify the work of a diverse range of practitioners and researchers in the ethical, safe and inclusive development of AI. “MAIEI was founded to help define humanity’s place in a world increasingly characterized and driven by algorithms,” says Abhishek Gupta, founder of MAIEI. “Treating AI as inherently good overlooks the important research and development needed for ethical, safe and inclusive applications. Poor data, inexplicable code or rushed deployment can easily lead to AI systems that have a detrimental impact on society.” For the past two years, Gupta has been organizing and leading the AI Ethics community in Montreal. What started out as a simple experiment in building public competence in AI Ethics has grown into a movement of people that are empowered and informed to contribute to shaping technical and policy measures in the ethical and responsible development of AI. MAIEI and the AI Ethics community includes over 1,350 members and has contributed to public policy recommendations, including the Montreal Declaration for a Responsible Development of Artificial Intelligence. MAIEI’s work has been published in the Stanford Social Innovation Review and the Oxford Internet Institute, among others. “A key differentiator of the MAIEI Fellowship is our focus on applied experiments,” says Renjie Butalid, co-founder of MAIEI. “We highly encourage field experiments that are driven by and for communities that will be impacted by AI. We believe that MAIEI Fellows will contribute to the creation and adoption of many technical and policy measures that address ethical, safety and inclusivity concerns in AI development.” MAIEI invites applications from people working on a broad range of opportunities and challenges related to the societal impacts of AI. This includes, but is not limited to, software engineers, scholars and researchers from all fields, as well as artists, philosophers and practitioners of all backgrounds. Broad topics of interest at MAIEI include, but are not limited to: Social inclusion in AI, Mission-driven AI, AI Ethics in Medicine, Algorithms in Politics, the Malicious use of AI, Embedding values into machines, Algorithmic Discrimination, Algorithmic Impact Assessments, and Data Privacy and Access Controls. MAIEI Fellows are expected to gather in-person three times a year. The first gathering will be in Montreal for one week in June 2019. The second and third gatherings will be two-day engagements in cities to be confirmed, scheduled for November 2019 and April 2020. Academic, corporate and government partners, advisory board members and mentors for the 2019-2020 MAIEI Fellowship will be announced shortly.
