OnRobot Launches Innovative New Collaborative Grippers and Force-Torque Sensor Upgrades

The Gecko Gripper, Polyskin Tactile Gripper, RG2-FT gripper and a technical upgrade of the HEX force-torque sensor product line based on OptoForce technology will open up new applications for collaborative robotics and make implementation even easier. In this fast-growing market segment, OnRobot has positioned itself from the ground up as the innovative provider for collaborative grippers and end-of-arm tooling.

The newly founded OnRobot presents three new products and a technical upgrade at this year's automatica.

Innovative gripping with gecko and NASA technology
The innovative Gecko Gripper, developed by Perception Robotics, was inspired by nature and uses the same adhesive system for gripping as the feet of a gecko, with millions of fine fibers that adhere to the surface of the workpiece and generate strong van der Waals forces. For the Gecko Gripper technology, OnRobot licenses a concept originally developed by the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and brought it to market maturity.

The unique and fast-moving solution for handling large, flat objects makes vacuum grippers and their compressed air system unnecessary. In contrast to vacuum grippers, the Gecko Gripper can also handle perforated or porous workpieces such as printed circuit boards without any problems. The gripper is compatible with Universal Robots and Kawasaki robotic arms. The high degree of innovation has led to the system being among the three finalists of this year's renowned IERA Award, for innovation and entrepreneurship, which will be awarded at automatica.

More sensitivity for demanding workpieces
The Polyskin Tactile Gripper also comes from the innovation forge of Perception Robotics. The solution specializes in sensitive gripping: Both fingers can be individually aligned and have integrated tactile sensors at the fingertips. This allows the gripper to precisely measure the condition of the surface of workpieces and align its gripping processes accordingly. These properties take tactile gripping to a whole new level, especially when working with sensitive or irregular workpieces. The Polyskin Tactile Gripper is also compatible with Universal Robots and Kawasaki.

Gripper for precise assembly
OnRobot is launching a variation of its established RG2 gripper, the RG2-FT with integrated force-torque sensors and a proximity sensor, which also accurately detects the condition of objects. The gripper detects the danger of objects slipping off even before it happens, making handling even safer – for workers as well as for the workpiece. This gripper model is particularly suitable for use in precision assembly and is compatible with lightweight robots from Universal Robots and KUKA.

Fast installation for sensors
The OnRobot product line for force-torque sensors based on OptoForce HEX technology has received a substantial technical upgrade, making installation and handling of the sensors even easier and faster. Mounting is now up to 30 percent faster, partly thanks to overload protection now integrated in the sensor, which no longer has to be removed and mounted separately when attaching to the robot arm. Furthermore, the weight of the sensor can be reduced by 20 percent. A new, improved sealing ring also protects the HEX products better against dust or water in the environment.

The ASC Capacitor HCO/HCG Single Phase AC Filter Capacitor is engineered for input and output filtering in UPS, Motor Drives, LC/LCL Filtering, Wind and Solar Power and other power conversion technologies.

The ASC HC (High Current) single phase capacitors are manufactured with very high quality metallized polypropylene film, designed for long life, low dielectric losses, higher RMS current ratings and low ESR. There are two types, the HCG is filled with ASC™ soft gel and the HCO is filled with biodegradable vegetable-based oil.

Both designs offer excellent thermal conductivity to help reduce internal heating and extend the life of the capacitor. The oil-filled version is mounted upright, while the gel-filled model can be mounted in any position. Both are covered in aluminum casing and the male terminals (M6 or M8) and the female terminals (M5-M8) are tin plated brass.

This line of capacitors is also incorporated with internal UL recognized fusing mechanisms that interrupt when pressure reaches a tested level. The products meet IEC61071, IEC60831 and UL810 standards.

NSA Designates Southern Utah University as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education

Cedar City, UT, June 22, 2018 --(PR.com)-- The National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have designated Southern Utah University as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education (CAE-CDE). SUU is the only public university in Utah to receive this designation.

“This designation truly represents a rigorous national standard for our high-quality cybersecurity degree programs on campus,” said Dr. Dezhi Wu, director of the Cyber Security and Information Assurance Graduate Program and professor of information systems. “It promotes excellence in our academic programs, new research and funding opportunities in cyber defense for our faculty and students, new collaboration opportunities with other universities & industry partners, and our outreach opportunities to the community. It also certifies us to produce professionals with cyber defense expertise for the nation.”

According to the notification from the NSA and DHS, “(SUU’s) ability to meet the increasing demands of the program criteria will serve the nation well in contributing to the protection of the National Information Infrastructure... Like all nations, the United States has a compelling interest in defending its vital national assets, as well as our core principles and values, and we are committed to defending against those who would attempt to impede our ability to do so. Education is the key to promoting these ideals.”

SUU has become a national leader in cyber security education in recent years. The university offers strong undergraduate programs in computer science and information systems, with options to specialize in cyber security. SUU also has a Masters of Science in Cyber Security & Information Assurance program which focuses on the design and management of systems tasked with defending networks from external threats, such as terrorism.

“We see a lot of news about cyber security and a growing gap in the workforce, meaning there are a lot more jobs out there than we have qualified individuals to fill,” said Dr. Rob Robertson, Computer Science and Information Systems department chair. “This designation puts us into a National Community that is dedicated to improving the cybersecurity skills of professionals entering the industry. It is a great community to belong to, and will open many doors for the University and our students.”
