Solver Named One of the 2017 Best Places to Work in Los Angeles

Each year, the list is made up of the 100 top companies to be recognized. Solver, Inc. has been named one of this year’s Best Places to Work in Los Angeles.

To be considered for participation, companies had to fulfill the following eligibility requirements:

Be a for-profit, not-for-profit business or government entity.
Be a publicly or privately held business.
Have a facility in Los Angeles.
Have at least 15 employees in Los Angeles.
Be in business a minimum of 1 year.

Companies from across the county entered the two-part survey process to determine the Best Places to Work in Los Angeles. The first part consisted of evaluating each nominated company's workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics. This part of the process was worth approximately 25% of the total evaluation. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. This part of the process was worth approximately 75% of the total evaluation. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final rankings. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration and survey process in Los Angeles, analyzed the data and determined the final rankings.

The actual rankings will be revealed at a special event on August 11, 2017, then published in the August 21, 2017 issue of the Los Angeles Business Journal.

Maker Friendly Sensor Board Uses Cutting-Edge Smartphone Technology

Toronto, Canada, July 14, 2017 --(PR.com)-- It's about a low-cost distance sensor module that makes use of a new laser sensor chip from ST Microelectronics called the VL53L0X. The chip has already shipped in over a quarter billion smartphones to date. The sensor chip is fairly complex to use but this project aims to fix all that by adding some smarts inside of a dedicated 32-bit microcontroller. As a bonus, they have souped-up the sensor to run at 50% higher than normal speeds.

"We were working on relatively simple project that needed an accurate, low cost proximity sensor some time ago," explains Dinesh Bhatia, Principal Design Engineer at MicroElectronicDesign. "The ultrasonic sensors available online in abundance are horribly inaccurate when you actually go to use them. But the specs look great on the websites. I don't know how they can get away with that! So we looked into companies that the big guys used. That's where we found the new VL53L0X laser sensor chip from ST. Talk about a lot technology in this little package! It contains a cavity laser in silicon and over 200 avalanche diodes that are so sensitive they can even respond to a single photon. And it can measure down to picoseconds. From their presentations we knew it had shipped in over 250 million phones so we knew it wasn't based on fluff. But using it was the next challenge. There was so much technology in it that even the documentation was daunting so we decided to change that by making a tiny board with a dedicated 32-bit microcontroller to deal with this laser sensor chip and talk in simple terms to Arduino. This makes tinyLiDAR one of the most user friendly and highest performing laser sensors around. And its perfect for Makers at any skill level." North Iowa Middle School Girls Get a lesson in 3D Design, Design Thinking and More This Summer

The National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE), the nation’s leading organization focused on promoting entrepreneurship through community colleges, and Verizon have announced a new program focusing on providing science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) and entrepreneurial skills for middle school girls in rural areas throughout the country.

Verizon Innovative Learning, the education initiative of the Verizon Foundation, brings free technology, access, and immersive, hands-on learning experiences to kids in need. The program is designed to address the need for more girls, especially in rural America, to be prepared for STEM careers of the future. Through a three-week summer learning experience to be held at North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, 50 local middle school girls will be exposed to the fundamentals of coding, 3D design, entrepreneurship and augmented reality. They will have the opportunity to develop digital media products with virtual and/or augmented reality, and return to the college monthly throughout the school year for continued learning. The pilot program is being implemented in partnership with NACCE and five of its member community colleges.

Why Now
Women continue to be underrepresented in STEM careers, where a staggering 86 percent of engineers and 74 percent of computer professionals are men. The percentage of women in STEM careers has not improved since 2001, specifically within the engineering (12 percent) and computing (26 percent) workforces.12

“Verizon Innovative Learning is committed to inspiring and engaging young girls to pursue STEM studies and careers,” said NACCE President and CEO Rebecca Corbin, Ed.D. “Through these summer camps, students will be exposed to new technology and experience first-hand how digital media and technology impact the world around them. Mentors will guide them through the process of using mobile technologies to create and deliver innovative solutions to social issues.”

NACCE has created the curriculum and provided the teacher training for program instructors. It has also secured five rural community college sites to host the summer initiative. Each of the colleges receives a sub-grant of $75,000 for its participation in the pilot program as well as software licensing, data plans, and mobile devices, including iPads. The five colleges include: Western Iowa Tech Community College, Sioux City, IA; North Iowa Area Community College, Mason City, IA; Paul D Camp Community College, Franklin, VA; Patrick Henry Community College, Martinsville, VA; and Roane State Community College, Harriman, TN.

- - Producing holograms that consist of thousands of tiny pieces. During the card lamination, the melted polycarbonate flows between these pieces. Any removal attempt thus results in irreversible dissolution of the hologram.
- - Combining holograms with microholograms, microscopic metallic dots sometimes called "holographic dust." There are a full hologram and letters engraved on each dot.

Most of Optaglio production for polycarbonate cards is now delivered to security printing companies and card producers in Asia and Europe. This year OPTAGLIO also starts to offer application machines so that the clients can perform entire production process in-house.
